History

The origin of the Great Domaša water work was destroyed by 6 original villages Dobrá nad Ondavou, Kelča, Petejovce, Trepec, Veľká Domaša, Valkov. In two villages several houses and buildings were demolished in the flooded area of Bžany and Turany nad Ondavou. The village of Kelča has not disappeared, because the new village of Nová Kelča was established on the banks of Domaša. In the autumn of 1965, the waters of Ondava flooded Kelča and the newly established village of Nová Kelca became the youngest village in the country. Dozens of families have found their home in the surrounding villages and towns after the destruction of the old Kelce. From the outset, it was primarily the center of the construction of family and business chalets, which are located along the slopes of Čopánky. An alternative of shifting the whole village and creating a new village as in the case of Nová Kelč was not carried out in the village of Valkov. Most of the inhabitants of the flooded village of Valkov moved to Solná Baňa in 1965. The other families of the heated Valkov who decided not to receive housing in Solivar found their new home, for example, in Stropkov, Humennom, Banská Bystrica, Breznica, or Ľuboticeia near Prešov. In today's Valkov recreation area, two objects have been preserved, namely the Roman-Catholic Temple of Provera Presvjatoj Bohorodici from 1817 and the family house, which is actually the original house of the Girov family, nowadays the popular restaurant Rumpel. The village of Valkov was not electrified until its destruction. The construction of Domaše required a transfer of the route from Vranov to Stropkov, the transfer of electric and telephone lines along the state road. Municipalities and roads, farmland with an area of 1100 hectares and forest land of about 300 hectares were flooded.

Location and climate

Green pearl of eastern Slovakia - the Veľká Domaša water reservoir, built on the Ondava River, is situated in the mountainous environment of the Ondavska vrchovina. Warm climatic conditions create favorable conditions for swimming, water sports and fishing in several recreation centers. The Domaša water reservoir, with two-thirds of the area, extends to the territory of the Vranov nad Topľou district and the northern part reaches the Stropkov district. The entire reservoir is of great water-bearing importance with a polyfunctional character: regulation of water inlets to the East Slovak lowlands, reservoir of utility water and prospective and drinking water and use for recreational purposes. For annual precipitation fluctuations and uneven water abstractions, the water level is also intensely fluctuating over the course of the year, resulting in the abrasion of coasts, with the subsequent activation of clusters on adjacent slopes, severely damaging economic objects, especially roads.
