History

In 931 AD, Kaprun, called 'Chataprunnin in Pisconcia' back then, was mentioned for the very first time. It was only in 1280 AD that it grew, when they started building a castle, Burg Kaprun, which now serves as the town's landmark. Tourism really only started at the beginning of the 20th century when the contemplative community began to make itself a name as a mountain guide village. In 1955, the launching of the Tauernkraftwerke power stations paved the way for a continual upward development. The hydroelectric power stations grew to be amongst Austria's largest and most significant sources of energy.

Location and climate

Kaprun is a truly picturesque Austrian mountain village at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier movement is technically very central and is easily accessible by car, train (station Zell am See) and plane (Salzburg). The weather in summer is most often clear sky and reasonably hot weather. If you choose to come early or later on in the season you may experience the odd storm or two. Make sure you bring a waterproof!

Tourist attractions

The village can look back on an eventful history of many centuries. Its figurehead is its castle, 'Burg Kaprun'. The building, which had a total overhaul in 1975, was erected on a prominent piece of rock in the 12th century. Even up until today, it has been serving as a platform for many cultural events. Its eastern tower, which is called 'Turn ze Chaprunne', was built in the Romanic style.

Surroundings

A special attraction for holidaymakers from all over the world is the glacier skiing area at a height of 2900 meters above see level. This is where winter sports enthusiasts meet the best of conditions for unclouded fun in the snow. Even in the summertime, it is perfectly possible to use the pistes; they cover a distance of 41 kilometres. About 20 kilometres of the fluffy snow are to be found on Maiskogel, the little brother of mighty Kitzsteinhorn.
