Prague is the largest city in the Czech Republic, the capital city of the Czech Republic, the seat of Central Bohemia region (which surrounds the area of ​​the town) and also a separate administrative unit. It has a surface area of 496 km ² and has 1,286,008 inhabitants.

History

On the territory of today´s Prague was settled various tribes in prehistoric times. In the 6th century, the Slavs began to colonize the Prague Basin. Beginning of the 12th century, Prague has been flourishing city and the royal castle was switching off over it. In the late 19th century, Prague was already the industrial, fast growing city with factories and railway and the other Czech countries with its size could not equaled to Prague. At the end of World War I was declared the independence of the Czech state, which was subsequently joined by Slovakia. In Prague there was the destruction of symbols of the Austrian monarchy. From 15 March 1939 Prague was the capital city of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. After World War II, the first settlements began to emerge. The introduction of standard relations with Western European countries after the Velvet Revolution opened tourism in Prague like never before.

Location and climate

Prague is located in the northern mild temperate zone with a strong alternation of four seasons at the transition between oceanic and continental climate. The city belongs to the dry and very dry area with regard to precipitation and temperature. Most of Prague is protected from westerly winds Petřin and Letná and in the city are frequent mists, fumes and fogs because of its lee location.

Tourist attractions

The historic city center with a unique panorama of Prague Castle is the conservation area by UNESCO. Town reserve was established here in 1971 in area of ​​8.22 km ² . Staré Město, Josefov, Malá Strana, Hradčany with Prague Castle, Nové Město and Vyšehrad belongs to it. It is the largest urban conservation area in Europe. The city has many national cultural monuments and thousands of construction and artistic monuments.

Surroundings

Karlštejn, previously also called Karlov Týn, the medieval castle is located in the administrative area Budňany in the town of Karlštejn in the district of Beroun, about 30 km southwest from Prague, in the middle of the protected landscape area Český kras. The foundation stone was laid on 9th June 1348 by Archbishop Arnošt from Pardubice. The castle was built to protect the imperial crown jewels and holy relics. Later in castle were kept the Czech crown jewels. Nowadays the castle is an important national cultural monument and one of the most visited castles in the Czech Republic.
